A Guide to Portland’s sweetest treats

Beat the heat with these
sweet treats!

Portland is exploding with awesome new flavors to celebrate summer! When you’re in need of something delicious to help cool off, these best of PDX shops will take good care of you!

Pinolo Gelato

Pinolo Gelato was launched in June of 2015 by Pisa-born native Sandro Paolini with the intention of reviving traditional Italian gelato-making methods to create pure, simple products in an authentic way. Pinolo’s goal is to source the best varieties of ingredients in order to respect tradition and make the finest quality gelato—like it used to be.

Paolini's fior di latte (plain) gelato is fresh and sweet, like good mozzarella. The pistachio has the bite of really good baklava. The chocolate is rich and bitter, leaving a lasting taste in your mouth all day. And summer’s fresh fruit bounty pops up for seasonal specials only available this time of year. Buon appetito!

Eb & bean

Craving something light? Eb & Bean offers frozen yogurt with a Portland twist, namely

gourmet, all-natural and scratch-made toppings like roasted hazelnuts, dye-free sprinkles and waffle cone pieces. Adorned with colorful decor and friendly polar bear murals, Eb & Bean is a favorite among kids and adults thanks to its creative frozen yogurt flavors — like brown sugar sesame and guava lime — plus their colorful toppings bar. This vegan-friendly shop always offers four rotating dairy-free flavors…along with all-natural toppings like coconut whip, marionberry compote, and magic shells.

Let’s get topping!

Ice Queen

Ice Queen is the result of kawaii dreams and a desire to make plant-based frozen treat magic for the masses. Born out of the desire to share healthy and delicious goodies while simultaneously introducing people to more sustainable, plant-based options, Ice Queen is one of the first plan-based popsicle shops in the world.

The vision for creating a whimsical storefront for customers to experience Ice Queen’s world of cute, fun, and flavorful experience has been founder and owner Rebecca Smith’s most rewarding journey. From recipe collaborations with other small food purveyors to creating bold, fun, and unforgettable treats, Ice Queen is all about community and bringing joy to people in the form of a healthier dessert option.

Kulfi

While kulfi is less well-known in North America, it is a popular frozen dessert in India. Kulfi is often described as Indian ice cream, yet unlike ice cream, kulfi isn’t churned. Kulfi is made by slowly simmering milk on the stove until it thickens, which results in a denser and creamier texture than ice cream🍦

Some of Kulfi PDX’s flavors are Indian-inspired, like the mango🥭 lassi made with yogurt (the most popular flavor); the ‘Rose City’ made with rose water, Rooh Afza (a concentrated herb and fruit syrup), and cardamom🌹; and the Pista, which combines pistachio and saffron 🌿

Beyond ice cream, Kulfi offers falooda, an Indian treat that combines rice vermicelli, basil seeds, jelly, and mango pulp or rosewater syrup. Also look out for warm chai ☕️to drink, plus soda floats 🥤with a vanilla pop dunked into them.

Polar cone

If there’s one thing we should definitely trust in kids, it’s their taste in sweet treats.

Siblings Sylena Kennedy and Aaron and Nimah Crews just 13, 12 and 11 years old started Polar Cone 2 years ago to save money for college. The trio operates their snowcone cart on the corner of 16th and Killingsworth, M-W, from 4:30 - 7:30 PM 🧊

Try out their special edition flavors honey lavender and minty green, in collaboration with @saltandstraw! ❄️

One more cool treat to share with you goes into your ears and not into your mouth!

Staccato Gelatto

🍨🍩☕️Gelato, donuts, espresso, & more! 🍨🍩☕️

Located on one of Portland’s most tasty streets, NE 28th, Staccato Gelato is a bright, laid-back space for handmade gelato, plus other goodies like Thai iced tea and donuts. The shop boasts an array of 120 rotating flavors, including funky options like balsamic vinegar, Guinness, and pumpkin. Thats not to say their original flavors are any less exciting! Their vanilla comes from Mexico, the original home of the vanilla bean orchid. It is a warm, smokey vanilla with a robust fragrance — perfect for a creamy scoop of gelato.

Cheese & Crack

Who’s ready for a cheese snack? Everybody 🧀🍦

While Cheese & Crack is more than a straight-up ice cream shop, their luscious, pitch-perfect vanilla soft serve is an insider secret (you’re welcome) and comes with dusting options of chocolate, strawberry, matcha or—stay with me here—BEET. Do not pretend you do not love this, Portland. Cheese & Crack’s vanilla soft serve tastes like scientifically perfect custard—thick, not too sweet, and deeply satisfying.

Lovely’s 50/50

There’s a welcoming and romantic farm vibe to wood-fired pizza spot Lovely’s Fifty Fifty. Their ingredients are seasonal and sourced from nearby farms. Their ice cream, available to go at the front of the restaurant, or for dessert after dinner, is housemade in small batches and changes with the influx of local farm bounty.

There’s something about the way this ice cream is made that brings the ingredients’ flavors right to the front. While Lovely’s 50/50 is best known for their pizzas and wine their ice cream may just be Portland’s best kept secret.
